Advice on where to buy domains

Hi,

I need to buy a domain, while I know of places where you can buy them I don’t fully understand the world of buying domains.

I would like to buy it and own it. Is this possible? I keep finding the one I want for £10 every 2 years… Why is this? Who owns that?

Thanks

I think 10 year locking is a very good idea.

As prices keep rising it’s worth considering locking in a good domain for 10 years if you have long term plans for it.

Domain name belongs to you as long as it is renewed by you. I recommend you use auto renewal services. Most domain name registrars can offer that for you.

You register domains on yearly basis, it does not have one-time set price like homes

You cannot buy a domain indefinitely. To all extents and purposes you “rent” the domain, normally renewing it each year that you want to keep it - that is just how the domain registration system works.

You can register a domain for 10 years at a time, and then renew that registration every 10 years to keep the domain.

I tend to use Namecheap for my domains and highly recommend them.

Be aware you will not own your domain name for ages. Once you have paid for the domain name it will be yours for nest year.

Yeah, sorry - I was referring to .com, .net, and .org domains there.

As Felgall says, some TLDs vary on the maximum duration of registration, for example:
.co.uk is maximum 2 years
.de is maximum 1 year

It depends on the particular top level domain. Some allow you to select anywhere from one to ten years at a time while others have more specific limits. There are a number of top level domains where two years at a time is the only available option.

You owns that if you register it and no one else. It’s called domain name registration. Usually it’s for one year and you can renew it anytime for longer (in your case it’s 2 years it probably co.uk or .de am I right? certain domain tlds like .co.uk require 2 years registration) Just always remember to renew it before the expiration time otherwise you may loose it.

Some most widely used domain registrars:

  1. It is possible to buy and own a domain. Register the domain on your own name.
  2. Check the whois record of the domain from this link http://centralops.net/co/DomainDossier.aspx if it is not available to know who is the owner.

It appears you are looking for a domain which is already registered by someone else. You can go for another TLD.

Good luck
