I ran a report against my site which said I should renew my domain because it is set to expire in under a year.
Am I likely to get penalised by Google because my domain will expire in under a year?

Not until it actually expires. The only thing the search engines look for with a domain name that affects SEO is how long it is since the current owner of the domain first registered it.
