Advertising a local news portal

How would you guys go about advertising a new local news site. SEO is a given, but is it worth it to do PPC or PPV, on AdWords, Facebook or on some websites maybe?

Anyone who has had some experience, please share it with me, thanks!

Unless you have a specific, desirable product to sell, I’d put my efforts into social media such as Twitter, Facebook, forums etc.

There are quite a few options depending on the nature of business.

You can always use geographically targeted campaigns using adwords or so.
Other then that there are yellow pages(online), local newspaper sites etc etc.

You could also look into getting links from local businesses in the area (not for SEO purposes, but simple for human clicks).

How local are we talking? If it is just for a smallish town it may be worth looking into flyering and some promotional mail to each resident/business.

It is a municipality of ~150k people, the town itself has ~100k.

As far as flyering goes, do you think it could be effective?

Thank you for the suggestions so far guys

PS. the site does not sell anything, except advertising space, so there is really no product, such as an affiliate one or any of my own.

What it is aiming at is mostly business people that will read the site during pauses at work.

Yes. For local marketing offline can work very effectively.
If you coincide it with and online campaign with a Google AdWords campaign that only targets your municipality as well then all the better.

Each town or region is different, so it is difficult to tell you what will be successful in your town specifically - but don’t exclude offline advertising even for a digital product.
