Some questions about a local classified ads website?

hi all
I am starting a classified ads site soon and would like to hear your opinion about somethings

  • the website will be very local targeting a city in my country
  • there is only one well known competitor in addition to Facebook pages
  • I have an excellent domain name targeting my city
  • there will be google ad-words advertising for the site and I will advertise it in some FB pages
    my questions is:
in the past I had a forum and WordPress blog and I had bad experience with spam I do not know if I will have the same issue or not with my site but I am thinking if I can make my website only appear in my city through some code if this is doable also if its doable do you think that this will affect my google ranking in a good or bad way I am thinking of doing this first because its local anyway and to get red of spammers there are no spammer here I think also because to automate things I do not want people from other countries post in the site and about automating things do you think that I can allow people to post and there posts approved without me involving only I check the site one day or the other day also do you think I can allow people post without registration at least at the beggening I think this is doable only if I made it local through some code another reason for me trying to make it appear only in my city through some code
also if anyone have a good marketing strategy for such website even through adwords I am not very sure what keywords I will target
finally any info or advice in this subject is very appreciated

Hi

you can control the spam in many different ways. and restrict other country users to register. secondly i dont think its possible that you can make your website appear only in your location through any codes, may be you can optimize in such way through SEO to rank in that particular location. And using Google Keyword Planner you can target keywords based on the services you provide. Search Netowork, display ads, gmail ads, FB and Insta marketing are great tools to drive traffic.

You can’t restrict your site to only one city. Indeed, why would you want to? Somebody living in your city but working somewhere else may want to check your site from work. Somebody who doesn’t live there but is coming to visit the city might want to visit your site.

If you use a country-specific domain (e.g. example.ly), then Google (and I expect other major search engines) will automatically assume your site targets your country. That doesn’t mean it won’t be shown in search results for other countries, if the search terms match. You can block visitors from other countries from the site, but think very carefully before you do that. In my opinion, you’d be much better off putting robust anti-Spam methods in place.

Frankly, no. Not unless you’re prepared to have your site over-run with Spam in between your visits. If Spammers find they can post what they like without any checks or need for approval, you’ll be inundated. There are methods which will help prevent automated Spam - for example, there’s a useful discussion here: Bot spamming on forms - but no way I know to prevent human Spammers, apart from active moderation.

How you would market it? Facebook ads. Period.

Are you suggesting only marketing on Facebook, @janeoftrades? No AdWords or other advertising?

Not everybody uses Facebook.

This may be of interest…

A friend of mine and his wife opened a Nail Shop in a North Yorkshire, UK town about six months ago. Their FaceBook advertising has been remarkably successful and they now have six full time staff.

Also I am a moderator on a FaceBook Group and just received this email from FaceBook Marketing:

Cost Converion: THB 670 just over 20 USD

thanks for your reply
I am planning in using quickad script I am not sure if it has the functionality of restricting users from other countries anyway I will figure it out after I set it up and its not possible through code I really believe its doable I read somewhere HTML5 has new Geo location functionalities that may be capable of doing that also there are website that tell you your city through your IP and have like code libraries for this purpose anyway maybe I will try without anything and see how it goes first although I know it will be a lot of work and time without automating things
I took a look at your script nice script and good luck with it

I kind of agree with your opinion the most important reason is to try to automate things a little also there are some tension between cities here and the country is not very stable anyway I will try first and sea how it goes

and no I am not using a LY domain although I was owner of a domain called Market.ly I really do not believe how I let it slip from you my domain the tripolimarket.com I think it can get a high rate in google for the most important keyword for the project which is the name of the domain we do not use the word classified here do you have any opinion on the name I really believe in it but It will take a lot of time and by time I mean not less than two years so people get used on it

IP addresses are not always an accurate way to determine somebody’s location. For example, I’m based in the west of Scotland, but my IP address shows me to be in the middle of England, several hundred miles away.

If you want to go ahead with this, then I’d have thought the way to do it would be by using the .htaccess file. Rather than blocking huge numbers of IP addresses, it would be better to allow only those from your own country. There are sites like this one which will help you create the file. If you need further help with it, then ask in the Server Config area of the forums.

Be aware that doing this will block anybody using a proxy server, and possibly other legitimate users.

Then you can use geo-targetting in webmaster tools to set your targetted location to your country.
