I have a 12Mb video to add to a web page. These days I would usually upload it to Youtube and place a link to Youtube but my client doesn’t want that. I want to have video controls and want it to work cross-browser and don’t want the hassles I get with Quicktime. Any suggestions?
Easiest thing to do would be to get your client to subscribe to a video platform – think youtube in terms of functionality but white-label. Many, many options in that space though most are a bit pricey for a single video.
If you need to roll your own solution, you’ll need to transcode the video to:
a) flash video (flv) for most desktop clients
b) mpeg4 / h.264 for just about everything else
c) perhaps webM for filthy hippies
Then you can mount the video in page using something like flowplayer using something like swfobject. Caveat being you should detect flash support first and then render a html5 video tag for things that don’t get flash. And perhaps point said video tag at the webM source for any filthy hippies.
I agree with wwb_99 (except maybe about the filthy hippies!). The easiest option is to use something nicer than YouTube—such as Vimeo. (But I think you can only post non-commercial videos thee, so do look around a bit to make sure you are using the right one.)
Other options I’ve come across include Viddler, [URL=“http://blip.tv/”]Blip TV , [URL=“http://influxis.com/”]Influxis and [URL=“http://www.maxcast.com/”]maxcast.
Well, we can disagree on the filth hippies :).
Viddler was the outfit I was trying to think of – they are working into a sweet spot in the market north of vimeo/youtube/ustream but south of the ooyala’s and brightcoves of the world.
Hadn’t heard of those. Very impressive.
Thanks guys. I appreciate your help.

Well, they had better be for the price :).
FWIW, Ooyala is probably the best of the bunch – especially when it comes to delivering video to things other than pcs.
