I have changed complete my website and that’s why url structure also updated. On that time I have redirect approx 100 old site urls to new site urls for taking benefit of page rank….Now our new urls has been getting good page rank…
So can I remove redirection from old urls to new urls and removed old website urls from search engine indexing…
Too much 301 redirection is harmful or not?
Please suggest me on this asap.
You should leave the 301’s in place indefinitely. External sites are likely to be linking to the old urls for a long time - anyone clicking those links for the first time will still need the redirect. Also I doubt Google will carry forward their link juice if you remove the 301’s.
Jon…
little confusion…the old urls published on most of low quality websites, so you know google don’t like low quality backlink profile… i have done lots of social bookmarking for old urls… on this point i think remove 301 redirection…
but your point is right that old url still published on most of websites so when user click on that then it would be redirect on new url…and if remove 301 redirection then i have remove old these old urls else 404 error will be increased but for long term prospective need t take hard step…
so what you suggest on this…
If you believe the links are trashy then the Google recommended way is to disavow them…
(disclosure: I’ve never actually done this personally. Opinion varies on how effective it is.)
I have gone through the discussion between both of you and I also think that you there is no harm in keeping 301 redirection. You can keep as many as you want on your website. As far as the concern of low quality links triggers, you must use disavow tool from Google webmaster and restrict the influence of all the low quality links on your website. You shall be able to control all the low quality and spamming URL’s which are effective your website.
