Description

Forget tired, academic references, and avoid getting bogged down in the detail. With Jump Start Node.js, you'll pick up the basics of Node.js, and learn to put it to work right away. Node.js is different because it allows you to write front- and back-end code: that means, all your thinking can be in a single language, with shared code and templates. Not just easy-to-use, it's also lightning quick and super efficient. Node.js allows you to use your finely-tuned front-end skills on fast, scalable web applications.

Who is this for?

This book is aimed at two target audiences. You might be a front-end engineer who is interested in looking at server-side development — an existing knowledge of JavaScript will prove useful, even if you are unfamiliar with certain server-side engineering techniques. The second potential reader is the server-side engineer who uses another language such as PHP, Python, Ruby, Java, or .NET. The main benefit you’ll derive is seeing how your existing architectural, design, and pattern knowledge is applied to the world of Node.js. You may have little to no knowledge of JavaScript, but this should pose no big hindrance. By design, it’s an easy language to learn, and we will have covered many examples of both its syntax and idiosyncratic features by the end of the book.

One of the best "getting started"-type books I have ever read. Great blend of spoon-fed info, tips, tricks, and "more info" links. Highly recommended.

Good intro to using mysql and php, i read js php environment concurrent to this, good basics, like the title says its a jumpstart. I appreciate this series of books, because as we all most likely know developing for the web requires us to stay current in all of the frameworks, IDE's, language versions, content management systems, formats, best practises, etc, etc. and staying up to date is quite a burden if you don't have something like sitepoint.com to provide the excellent resource repository that is available here. I have went into projects knowing very little about specifics or aspects of any given technology etc, i read through the jumpstart series or one of the anthology groups and feel much more confident when i advise or plan or allocate resources to the wide ranging dev work that I am very active in, This is not so much about this specific book but more about the great team of collaborators, forum communities, bloggers and all of the person's who have given me some solid advice at one time or another.

Great introduction to node.js with examples for authentication, working with databases and web servers. There are also chapters with Bootstrap and Backbone frameworks.

Lots of unexplained code, more for the "copy and paste" fiddlers than for people who want to understand concepts. Too many topics.

Outdated. I have experience building nodejs application. I got an offer where all the Sitepoint books can be downloaded for free. I downloaded this book just to see if I could get some insights. I really didn't find anything useful and I would never recommend this book for beginners. Nodejs development has changed considerably since 2012. The author should update the book and provide clear instructions to perform certain tasks.
