Not always. There are some free hosts providing good support without any forced ads.

There may be free hosts that provide wonderful service and support. I can’t say much in this regard as I have never used a free host till now.
It’s because you are experienced person and you understand that free hosting company won’t be as good as average paid hosting company in most of cases. Even if they provide good support
Also there is not much meaning to demand support for a free service. In paid hosting a hosting company should provide proper service and support to a customer as he is paying for that.
I have been using freehostia for over a year. My site mypokersuccess (dot the rest) has had no issues at all. It is always up when I check it, it seems pretty fast. So ya if it is a site that is not super important to you go ahead with the free one to begin with. My other sites are on 3ix and I have had several problems connecting lately, go figure.
I tried one free web host for month…after a month they send me message…sorry for incovenience we had hardware failure…and my site was now history…
There’s really no point. I just use an add-on domain from my paid hosting account if I need to host new websites

Not all free things are bad. For example, there are tons of amazing software which is free.
Don’t you think you are trying to compare incomparable things: web hosting and software?

I use 000webhost for a couple of my sites that aren’t very popular and not that old yet. When I need to I’ll move them to paid hosting.
free hostings are also good like zymic and byethost
they provide good support and their servers never go down!
Nobody says that free hosts suck badly, but if person could afford paid hosting, he should definitely go with paid one.
I own a free webhosting service, There are good ones out there you just have to look hard for them.
