Only a few models that are no longer made (e.g., the Suzuki Samurai) have that predisposition. What makes SUVs dangerous is the false sense of safety they give the driver. Males who drive big hulking monster trucks tend to drive aggressively, in effect using the vehicle as a weapon to intimidate drivers of smaller vehicles. That can probably be chalked up to testosterone overload, since mature men who are in control of their hormones don’t exhibit that kind of brutish “typical male behavior” to the same degree. Soccer moms who yack on their cell phones or put on makeup, oblivious to the world around them, while driving simply lack proper driver training and/or skills. Just because you can go into a dealership and buy an SUV as if it were an ordinary passenger car without a special permit or license (as we cyclists are required to have) doesn’t mean you are competent to drive one. Unfortunately, the only safety an SUV driver is concerned about is his or her own personal safety. They have no appreciation (nor desire to appreciate) the problems these obscenely large vehicles create for other motorists. The fact that everyone thinks they “need” an SUV, when the real reason they buy them (be honest!) is because they are the American status symbol du jour, taken together with the way they drive them, is what gives SUV drivers the reputation of being vain, self-centered knuckle-draggers among civilized people.
I prefer the Bugatti Veyron, but the bicycle and suped up Scion Tc works for now.
