Which is better in online selling: Alibaba or Ebay?

There are people even books talking about branding on eBay, honestly to us it is overrated.

You guessed it right. Most of the customers came from massive traffic. There isn’t much about brand loyalty on eBay. Switching to another seller is the easiest thing on this platform, unless some new launched products were monopolized by a particular few sellers, even then it’s only for short while.

Placing on the right category(ies) is one of the tricks to be done carefully and wisely. As some stats done by eBay, a large number of buyers tempted to choose categories instead of doing keyword search on the 1st page. Some do both, i.e. keywords search, then limit the results by choosing the right categories.
eBay has a reputation of adding/changing new categories over time, if the old sellers being stucked to using automated system like turbo lister or 3rd party script, they would soon discover a slight drop of sales over time while not knowing what’s the real cause behind. Again, unless the seller is trading something very unique and not in fierce competition, category is less important then, since customers would not know how to start search from categories for these unique stuff.

There are a number of little tricks in play. Conquering these tricks might just boost the sales a little tiny bit (sometimes 5%-10% on eBay is the key to sustain on), but not knowing these, it’s near impossible to live on eBay.

All of the above suggestions do have pretty good points. I will take all your advice and start capitalizing now for future returns. Thank you so much for all your help!
