What is the use of Signature?

Hi everyone,

What is the main reason of using signature? Is it for backlinks or just to drive traffic into your sites?

Most forums use nofollow signature links these days. Thus, there is no direct effect in search engine rankings.

Signature links’ real value comes from humans following the links. As with advertisements, however, forum signature links have very low click through rates. Therefore, the mere presence of the signature have virtually no value. Those who sign up for a forum with the sole intention of promoting a website through signature links will rarely post quality contents. As a result, few people will follow the links, as the user has no inclination to dwell on that specific post.

To gain any real benefit from signature links, long-term commitment to both the forum and the post being written is paramount. An informative and well-written post from a long-term member will always gain attention, and just might result in one or two people visiting that member’s website. This is based on true interest and respect from the member clicking the link, unlike the odd, semi-random click on the signature link of a one-liner.

Either way, promoting a website through signature links is a waste of time. The time it takes to build a good reputation through high-quality posts on a forum, in order to get maybe ten or 20 clicks, could be much better spend promoting the website elsewhere. Writing on a forum should always be done for the community - anything else is pointless, philosophically as well as financially.

If you put your website name in your signature, yes

and you can get backlink from site …

That depends on the forum:

Signature links on this forum are nofollow.

Agree and I think its better to make community on Forums than thinking that Forum signatures will give more value.

For link building Complete Offpage is helpful. Through forum posting and blog comment you can maintain your page rank and traffic to your site. When you make your signature You can do many things so you should try to have a good idea of what you want your signature to look like. You can make text bigger and smaller and color it as well. If you want, you can make the text bold, underlined, or italicized. You can also add links and pictures to your signature and also link for your website.

it would be a good idea to check sitepoint’s signature FAQ before trying any of those tactics here at sitepoint

From that same FAQ:

Note that SitePoint is a no-follow forum. You will not receive a backlink from your SitePoint Forums signature.

So:

not on this forum

The intended use of signatures is “credibility”. The links in the signature go to pages belonging to the person who made the post that allows you to find out more about them. What you find there tells you how much you should believe their answer. If they have set up their signature properly then those links should effectively provide a way to find out more about the topic.

Signature used to create backlink whenever we posted a comment however, like C. Ankerstjerne commented, the click through rate is rather low. So, the important to post comment in forum is to build the community instead.

Forum is a place to build the trust, make friends and share the knowledge. If your intention is to sell your products, I am sorry to say you came to the wrong place.

Signature link not only use to get backlinks and traffic but also market your site to the world. Well whenever we’re adding a signature link in a forum, we’re not just make an one way backlink but also lounge our site ad to that forum and people atleast take a glimpse to the name which would be helpful in further.

When posting in a forum your signature can be used to include your links which can give you some quality back-links when those links get indexed. I understand that as a result of spamming activities lots of forums end up making their signatures no-follow which simply means that those links will not have as much weight as do-follow links.

But, what you should understand that forum is place a people come to learn what they didn’t know and to share what they’ve learned, if your goal is to use forum as a way to build back-links, you would have to try to do it the right way which is by being helpful, posting things that are relevant, or by becoming a contributing member.

Because it is easy to recognize those who are using forum for the sake getting back-links and those who want to contribute in a forum in a helpful manner.

If you are like some guys at warrior forums, your reason for using signature links is for spamming, like getting those juice. And that is not a really good thing to do. Unless if you are only up to black hat SEO. Your signature should only be used as link to your site, period.

If you are to promote your website, business, products or services through internet (forum posting, comment posting, article submission) you can take advantage of this signature. It is where you can leave your links to your site, since sometimes leaving links from the actual post is not allowed.

Signature used in niche Forums only helps to drive traffic and other than that dofollow signature links brings you backlinks. Forum signatures are not helpful to drive lot of traffic similar to other link building technique such as blogging, article submission, press release etc.

I agree with you. Only dofollow signature will bring you backlinks. No follow signature will help in driving traffic to your site but not lot of traffic.

Signature will helps to get backlinks of our website… it will also generate traffic also…
