VPN and browsing windows network with MAC client

Hi

I have set up a VPN connect from a Mac to a server which has files I need to access.

The connection using PPTP works fine (authentication etc successful) and I can see that I am connected, which is fine and dandy, but I can’t browse the network or access files on the server. How do I do this?

Perhaps I need to open more ports on the remote router?

I can ping machines over VPN

Once you have established the connection to the remote machine (Using the VPN option in Internet Connect I presume) select ‘Connect to Server’ from the finder Go menu.

In the box that appears enter your server address in the format

smb://your.server.details.here/foldertoconnectto

OK, thanks.
I tried using \\server\folder previously!

Now I get this error in console after entering the username and password for a particular folder. The folder doesn’t show up:

mount_smbfs: negotiate phase failed: syserr = Software caused connection abort

I’ve googled for this with no success. Any clues?

It’s OK. I worked out that I just need to connect to the server and then select the folder after authentication.

Many thanks for your help - saves a few grey hairs.

Now I have a problem with the connnection closing after a few minutes…

From console:

Apr 4 17:03:18 My-Mac pppd[1073]: MPPE disabled
mount_smbfs: error from NetrShareEnum call: exception = 382312522

I read somwhere that apparently smb does support digitally signed comms so I checked the Local Policies in XP, but it already is disabled.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

I’m doing this so that a Mac can use various resources via Virtual PC (with XP Pro installed). Is it possible to set up VPN client in Virtual PC XP Pro to get around this problem?

This should read:
“I read somwhere that apparently smb doesn’t support digitally signed comms so I checked the Local Policies in XP, but it already is disabled.”

I had a problem with the connection dropping to the VPN server from Virtual PC client. Turns out thet Norton Protection Centre was causing this to happen. All OK now. Norton P C has been a nuisance since installing it - it is virtually useless for servers.
