Thoughts on 1&1

Any actual experience with 1&1 Hosting?

To me they are the equivalent of what GoDaddy is to web hosting and domains ===> Bargin Basement!!

I have a domain registered with them, simply because my usual registrar didn’t offer that domain type.

I found their system weird and difficult to navigate - especially updating details - and unlike any other registrar or hosting company I’ve used, they send frequent promotional e-mails. Those things alone are sufficient to ensure I’ll never use them for anything else, and I’ll move my domain as soon as I can. However, that’s just me. Other people must be more tolerant, or they’d have no business.

I resolved never to consider them after the fiasco in 2011 where a bunch of prominent web design sites had their domains stolen, and 1&1 was spectacularly unhelpful in resolving the issue: https://css-tricks.com/this-sites-domain-is-stolen/

I spent years as the Hosting Team Lead monitoring complaints by SitePoint members of a variety of hosts. As I recall, noone had anything good to say about 1&1 and they were regularly ravaged by members. On that basis, I would never recommend them.

As I know they are many users complaints about their hosting services. Before sign up with them, please look deeper to find their review.

Avoid like the plague.

Would you care to enlarge on that a bit, @koll? Without more information, it doesn’t help much in making a decision. (We don’t know if you’ve had a really bad experience with their hosting, or have a grudge against them because of somebody you know who works for them, or what.)

If I felt like expanding on it then I would have at the time.
