The 64-bit question

The notion suddenly occurred to me: after 25 years at it, why don’t I change to 64-bit computing? I looked up some advice, and can see that the heart of the beast is fine for 64-bit.

But … there’s always a ‘but’ when it comes to computing. I use Windows7 and the CS5 suite. Is it likely that instead of progress I might really be about to heap on the problems?

Be grateful for some advice, experts.

I’m no expert and my pc is still a 32-bit pc. But when my pc eventually flies off with the angels to the pc graveyard in the sky, it’s replacement will definitely be a 64-bit pc.

With 64-bits you have twice as much data travelling between the CPU and RAM per unit time and so processing is generally much faster, everything else being equal, and with 64-bit you can install and access much more than the max 4GB RAM which I believe is the case for a 32-bit pc. Generally, you should try to install as much RAM as you can afford and that your pc can access.

I think you’ll find that accessing 64-bit versions of software is nowhere near the issue it might have been a few years ago - which is the only potential downside I am aware of for 64-bit pc’s.

Using CS5 on a 64-bit win 7 machine myself. No problems at all. Adobe has developed and tested extensively on the 64 bit environment since many of their users are on high-end machines, so you shouldn’t have any issues. A couple of their titles are developed to run on a 64 bit OS only. As stated above, the biggest advantage to a 64 bit OS is the ability to address more than 4 gigs of ram. I think for the most part, the 64 bit OS is really becoming the standard, with 32 bit becoming more of a legacy OS.
