Hi everyone,
I am currently working as a Software Engineer however have been looking around for a couple of weeks now as i want to leave my current place of work as they have got me mainly programming in classic ASP, and i want to move onto working with C# and ASP.NET 4.0 with MVC.
Now i have been for an interview today and did really well, i think they like me and might offer me the position. My role would be a Support Software Engineer. This would involve fixing bugs and implementing new smaller pieces of work. This is all done in ASP.NET 4.0 so is a step forward for me…
Once i develop my skills in support they will move me in the production team where i will be involved in building full CMS applications.
However, the problem is that I’m not sure if i should go for it as it is support and i will be liaising with clients… On the plus side they will train me and by being in support i will understand the systems better, know what the clients are like, and get the exposure i need in ASP.NET and C# etc…
Then after a year or so be moved into production…
What do you guys think? I do have a number of other interviews lined up that are pure development roles, nothing to do with support. This just depends on if i do well at the other interviews…
The interview i went to today is very appealing to me as it is closer to home also… But anyway what do you guys think?
What should i do? Please help…
Kind regards,
The Support Software Engineer one sounds cool to me.
You get to step forward with your programming, and there’s also interface with clients. It’s always good to know what the market out there is like. It’s also good to talk to people from time to time. And then, there’s room for promotion.
But you can always take a few other interviews and see what they offer then decide.
Anways, good luck with any decision you make!
Dealing with customers is challenging. People afraid of dealing with customers but in fact, this can further sharpen your communication skills. People who do only support at the back end, is more weak on communication skills. I’d strongly encourage you to go this position if the company offer you.
Since the post is created 1 week earlier. Not sure if you have entered the company?
Thanks pinkypainter,
I think you are right, i am still waiting for feedback from the company. They really like me so i’m surprised that they haven’t got back to me yet as there were 2 roles and they really did like me.
Anyway, something else happened today at work which i am now becoming worried about…
Basically i have put my CV online on different agencies such as Monster, CWjobs etc. Somehow the manager of the company i currently work at found out (apparently one of the agent recruiters asked him if he would like to interview ME when i was already working for him!!!)
Soo, he called me downstairs and asked me if i was looking around, and i just went with my instinct and said NO, i have no reason to leave. The thing that makes it worse is i have ahalf day holiday tomorrow because i have an interview (I have said it is a Dentist appointment). So anyway, i said I’m not looking around and re-assured him that I’m here to stay…
Little does he know the minute i get a job i will be handing in my notice. But if i leave now would it not look really bad on my side in terms of a reference and things like that?
Please advise on this, because i’m nto sure what to do now…
Staying at the company would mean being stuck with Classic ASP!!
Hope you can get back…
Kind regards,
This is a cool job.
my advice is that join this job for working and learn new techniques.
