Question(s) about PHP Live - Kevin Yank?

Hi,

Hope this is the correct place to post my question.

I have been developing with PHP and MySQL for about 2 years on and off.

I have built up great knowledge since then and have built a fully pledged website with php and mysql and obviously xhtml, css.

I am thinking about the course because i feel i want to learn one major thing and that is seperating the php code from the html code.

I bought the Build Your Own Database Driven Web Site Using PHP & MySQL, 4th Edition back a while ago and enjoyed it. I get a feeling this course counteracts with the book, but maybe i’m wrong.

I know there are many frameworks, php template systems out there but would rather not use them due to having to learn even more complex syntax.

Could someone please answer the following questions for me:

  1. Will this course teach me how to keep your php code seperate from your html code (by this i mean does it provide any real world examples in the videos) ?

  2. Will i be able to access the videos, course work etc anytime i want in the future ?

  3. When it says ‘Live’ does it mean we will watch Kevin Yank live doing the videos ?

(reason why is i am limited with time so would rather be able to view videos and do the course at my own pace and in my own time when i can fit it around my schedule)

  1. I guess as soon as i make payment i can access all videos etc? or do they only become available on certain days ?

  2. What do they mean exactly by “3 Recorded Q&A sessions” ?

My main objective it to learn how to properly seperate the php code from the html so i can in the future develop with more structured code as currently just do like a header, sidebar, footer include and place my html code and php code between the includes. I do have like a function.incphp, db.inc.php etc for reusing code that i would otherwise have to write over and over.

  1. I saw this course here: https://learnable.com/courses/php-mysql-web-development-for-beginners-13 , would i be better off with this one? reason i ask is in lesson 11 it says “Structured PHP Programming”, maybe this is the videos from the php live course, as if i can get more for my money then obviously i would like to.

Thanks for any help.

Thanks for any help in answering my questions.

Hi PHPLOVER. Welcome to SitePoint.

As far as I know, the book and the course follow similar lines, though each has unique aspects.

Here are the questions I can offer some answers to:

  1. Will i be able to access the videos, course work etc anytime i want in the future ?

Yes.

  1. When it says ‘Live’ does it mean we will watch Kevin Yank live doing the videos ?

No, not really. This course was first run last year, and at the time, the videos were “fresh”. There were some live Q&A sessions recorded at the time.

(reason why is i am limited with time so would rather be able to view videos and do the course at my own pace and in my own time when i can fit it around my schedule)

The course will suit that need perfectly. You can watch and re-run the videos whenever you like.

  1. I guess as soon as i make payment i can access all videos etc? or do they only become available on certain days ?

Yes. There is a system for sending reminder emails, but you can turn this off. It’s really for people who’d like to have the course measured out for them. But the whole course is there, ready to access, upon registration.

  1. What do they mean exactly by “3 Recorded Q&A sessions” ?

They were recorded live at the end of each of the three weeks when the course first ran. People could watch Kevin online and text in questions, which he answered in real time. These sessions were recorded, and are now a part of the course for all to see.

My main objective it to learn how to properly seperate the php code from the html

I’m sure you’ll learn what you need to know. I’m no PHP expert, but sometimes I don’t think it’s possible to separate them completely. Of course, no PHP remains in the page by the time it reaches the user’s browser, anyhow.

They are one and the same course (although Kevin may have made a few updates—I’m not sure, but I don’t think so. Obviously the name has changed, though.). SitePoint started to experiment with these courses last year (2010), and they were so successful that they decided to start up Learnable, in order to give these and many other courses a permanent, dedicated home. So the preference is for people to take the courses at Learnable, as that is where they are heading. That’s where most people will be taking the course(s) from now on, so you will find more of a community there involved in the Q&A sections etc.

Hello,

Thanks for replying, appreciate your time and effort.

I just saw a FAQ section and found a way to contact them directly.

I have contacted them asking the questions you could not be 100% sure on.

Once again thank you for your time!

You’re most welcome. glad you found some useful contacts.
