PPC Management - is it worth it to hire someone or do myself?

I own a ecommerce site where I sell consumer products. I have been working with a PPC management company for around 4 months now, and they are charging in the neighborhood of 15% of my ad spend. This essentially eats up a big chunk of my profit at the end. I am not sure how much they are doing because when I ask the manager what he did for the week he got nervous and gave a generic response like “oh we tweaked some things in the backend”. All I really know that they have done is filtered non performing states by using the cost per conversion and whatever is below our current bid he is preventing the campaigns from appearing in those states. I have averaged a conversion rate of around 3-4% so far with this company. They are doing all the management from my adwords account, so I have access to all the ads they created.

Do you think I can manage my own PPC account? Do I really need someone who’s only interest is increasing my ad spend so they make more money? I have around 4 months of data now from analytics and my adwords account, I am thinking that I could probably just look over everything and start managing it myself. Any good resources that I should be looking at to help guide me?

If you do it yourself, you must take time to learn the details from start to finish. On top of that, you must take time to manage your campaigns as you go along. Tracking, testing, tweaking must all be done yourself. Good thing is, you will know this particular business process very well.

Hmm unless you know what you are doing, the answer is ‘no’. Because your budget might be killed if you don’t understand the concept but of course, you can learn a PPC course yourself. I do recommend Perry Marshall Definitive Guide to Google adwords.

Are you good at PPC? If yes! you can do yourself or else you can hire good PPC expert. As you know it is a precious task to perform.
