I just received an order on my online store from someone in Malaysia.
It was for one of the cheaper items on the store £65.
The shipping and billing address are the same.
They paid with Mastercard.
They tried to complete the transaction twice but it failed with a Paypal 15005 error. On the 3rd attempt they were successful. 15005 means the issuing bank declined the transaction. This can happen for a number of reasons ie. if they input their details in incorrectly. However it could also be if they were trying cards which had been cancelled.
Does this seem suspicious? What should I do to make sure I don’t get ripped off and end up with a chargeback?
I’m a new store so don’t have much experience with this sort of thing.
I personally just hit the REFUND button
on those orders when selling products
as the fraud rate is simply too high.
You can alos call them. A quick phone
call can really screen out the fraudsters
as they’ll never speak with you and usually
not provide a real phone number to begin
with.
I will admit that I have had orders from
Nigeria that I canceled and then had the
customer call me …legit order.
If I did go through with the order how exactly can I lose out?
Is it if they have used a stolen card the bank will force a chargeback? Or are there other ways I could get screwed over?
Are the fraudsters likely to attempt fraud with relatively small orders in terms of cost?
I had a huge order a few days ago from indonesia which I realised was obviously fraud after a google search on the name they used but thought this one might be ok because it was for a relatively small amount.
Would asking for a scan of their passport to verify it matches the name on the card help?
