Hello everyone, I’m a new merchant and recently launched our online store. We are starting to get orders but the last few I received in the last 5 days have been extremely suspicious. Here is our story…
received an order on Friday - the person that found our site was using google.com.gh (Ghana) but they placed the order through a US ip address.
The shipping and billing address do not match. The billing is in NY and the shipping Florida.
Authorize.net settled the amount but I’m highly suspicious because of the search engine that was used to find our site.
That was on Friday and Today we had a similar order (same product but only 1 in quantity instead of 3) Same - using Google.com.gh but different keyword this time. Once again different billing and shipping.
I’m using bigcommerce for our store and I do not believe they have an option to restrict shipping/billing to match.
Anyone else experienced similar orders and what is the best step I can take?
many business dont try to match billing and shipping address. however they of course match the ones in file (in your case authorize.net is doing it i guess).
if you have suspicion of any kind, you should email the customer. or if you have a phone number there, call them up.
Ok great…I did call and no one picks up. BTW, the area codes of the phone numbers do not match the billing/shipping states. I emailed but the response I got was from someone with terrible English and they used yahoo email. Ahh, life in the big ecommerce.
It will be 100% fraudulent, I look at orders coming through our stores all day. I can pick fraud orders straight away after doing it for 10 years.
I wouldn’t bother even trying the bellow Gh Google address is a dead give away, their IP being in another country. Blah Blah
You can
1 of the most obvious but most looked over is how many times did they try and order, how many cards. I’m not sure if you can check this but if you check they may have tried 3 cards multiple times.
You can always hold an order for a few days, a real order will have the customer call you.
Calling with no pickup or calling with a clear redirect in the phone along with the other signs are often times hints of fraud. I would void the orders until I could have a nice chat with the person to get those questions answered.
