What is the basis of operation of an upload/download site? Why do they pay us for a file being downloaded from their site unlike CPC ads or ecpm ads or affiliate networks by commision. How do they make money by this process?

They make (made…) their money from premium subscriptions from downloaders who want to download quicker and multiple files simultaneously.
The more popular the files they hosted the more people that they would have paying for premium subscriptions to expedite the download process - and as has been made pretty clear, the most popular files tended to be copyrighted.

I have to add several PDF files ( most of them under 5 MB) to my web site. Even though I could add it in the servers of my host, I was thinking of adding them with file upload/download guys.
Are there any good ones who pay ( even in small cents) without survey. I checked hotfile and they need files above 5 MB. Without survey is important.
