Hi, I posted an article yesterday (it’s indexed), but after doing some more research I found out that the intent of the title doesn’t match the search intent…
So I want to change the title, and the URL too (so that they match). Basically, I want to do this:
Oiginal article:
domain.com/yadayada with a title and h1 of “yadayada”
I want to change it into:
domain.com/yidiyidi with a title and h1 of “yidiyidi”
The content will be exactly the same, except for the title and h1 tag.
Can this change be made without problems? And if so what would be the best way to do this?
P.S. the title isn’t all that different, the keywords that I’m trying to rank for stay in the same place and order. I only want to change the question that comes after that.
The sooner you make the change, the better. If you want, you can set up a redirect, so that if anyone clicks the old link they’ll be redirected to the new page.
Before altering the title check whether that article has been crawled by Google, if yes donot change it; if not, then do it ASAP.
Actually, I do not agree with that. If I have a webpage that is wrong - no matter for what reason - I change it regardless of whether it has been crawled by google or not.
It simply does not make sense to have an ill-targeted webpage.
Google will crawl the new webpage in time (include it in your sitemap). Do a 301 redirect as ralph.m suggested. If you do not have access to 301 redirects, then think about using the canonical meta tag.
I agree with Madeira. if new link is included in sitemap then will come into notice of search engines as soon as they crawl into.
Yes, you can change it without any problem…
I think you should redirect domain.com/yadayada to domain.com/yidiyidi and on your new page make the necessary amendments.
With this you can redirect all your traffic to this new page without any loss!
Use 301 redirect using htaccess file
This redirect can drop your traffic temporarily… But don’t worry, it will bounce back soon!
Try to change the url as soon as possible. And if you are using wordpress then some themes will automatically redirects old url to the new one. Don’t worry.
