Making a portfolio. Ahh its so confusing

Hi there,

I have been trying to make a portfolio for myself. And its really getting tough day by day…
I start making one very excited and then after 2 days or sometimes few hours I start hating it :frowning:

I feel it should have something more or something less. :?

Now there is a new confusing that has struck me. Which medium should I use? I can’t select online as I don’t want my current employer to feel bad or low

Print is good, but ten so is PDF for mailing. And a portfolio in a CD would really look good. :?

Actually I do a lot of designs like logo, packaging, ads, brochures, flash for my company and I would like to include 2-3 samples of each…
Then the other problem is should I keep it horizontal or vertical…

Do guys here have been through the same thing while making it for the first time?

Who are you likely to send it to? What medium is most convenient for them? Why is this an either/or choice at all? You could make a few different formats.

I would like to send it to my contacts at various organizations as well as to placements agencies… the later demands a CV in doc and a portfolio in PDF… but while meeting or sending a portfolio… a printed or a CD portfolio looks good and heavy.

Having various options is not a bad idea…

i voted online  im not a fan of storing my portfolio on media, everyone can access the net someway or another plus its good for your SEO - alot of people have found my business through my portfolio work online - obviously when i say online its on my own domain, but i guess you could get listed on a few other sites also

When im meeting a client i take my laptop and i can show it then or in most cases they have already seen my work through the web, plus the laptop goes with the whole high powered business woman look

Ya even I like it online. But then I can’t…
I don;t want my current employers to feel bad about it

And yes even I love to carry my macbook alone… it gives you that serious designer looks. There are many people out here in India of my age who say they are a designer…

I find when i start to create something even my portfolio online, the setting out and layout of it was a nightmare for me, i changed it so many times so I guess its just normal, u can be ur own worst nightmare when it comes to your own designs, chopping and changing here and there, but u will find something u will be happy with and it’ll be fine, it’ll just take time to find that, keep playing around with designs/layouts, have a look on other web designer sites and see what they did, maybe you will get some inspiration and transfer it to your own style.

You can’t always be looking out for other people, if this is going to be a source of income for you, you have to do whats in your best interest nevermind your boss - perhaps generate a few business cards with a private link to your art work and give it to the people you want to view your work only, therefore you can host it online so everyone you choose can access your portfolio whenever its convenient for them, its just an idea

I vote with online as well, it’s better to have something globally accessible and pass out some good looking business cards offline with the address than to hand out CD’s, print stuff or some fancy designed offline mechanism which cost money, will probably end up in the bin or will go missing. People don’t like putting stuff in their system unless they have to, giving them an address with everything at a click is the most common and best solution

If you are a print designer you have to have a print folio. The web version is just a representation of your print design. To seal the deal, the prints will have to be looked at so you definitely should have a print folio ready if you are going into any company serious about design.

For me, because I’m a web-designer and my designs are built for monitor screens, I like them to be viewed on monitor screens. So I have my website, and I pass out the URL regularly; On my call-card, over the phone, on my Facebook Profile. It’s almost everywhere my name is.

If I have to e-mail anything, I e-mail the website address.

BUT, I do like the idea of giving employers/hopefuls something to physically hold; Something that will literally sit on their desk and remind them about me all day long. So I’ve done print-outs as well, compiled into a booklet, which I handed out along with my resume. Using past tense there because I haven’t done it in awhile; Booklets are expensive to keep printing!

thats a good point actually - it depends on what sort of designer you are, I guess I thought u were a web designer like me but if ur into the whole print scene then sure i’d have something tangible to show ppl, u don’t want to be caught off guard!

Ya print portfolio is nice. Plus in have some odd website / WordPres work, for which I can show a printscreen kinda thing and mentioned the URL. But my major focus will be on the ads, brochures and packagings done.

Also the portfolio which I will make will also reflect my work. In terms of Design, Paper Selection, Colors, Costing n all…

But the thing is to make one, I seriously need to sit and work on it. And when I spend 4hrs on it I start hating it :frowning:

It is best to have a website. It is also good to have a PDF presentation on hand. I applied to a job recently that wanted a PDF presentation mailed. It was fun to compress it to the size they wanted it without totally trashing my art!

Depends on the kind of business you are looking for… Most people on the internet look for web & graphic designs so keeping your portfolio visible to them through an online page would be more easy …but if you are up for a local market…then CD, brochures are important…

Out of all the votes… I see majority goes for online !
