I indeed use Transmit and in my opinion it’s the best. Syncs favorites with my MobileMe account between computers. If I’d need to use a free alternative, I’d pick CyberDuck. Never tried FileZilla though.
Would you say Transmit is fast at uploading? For example, compared to something such as FileZilla or CyberDuck, which are free to use would I notice a difference in speed if I used Transmit instead?
The protocol TCP mainly determines speed via ‘handshaking’ and obviously your bandwidth and end stations within the client/server relationship rather than the program vendor. Though with good FTP programs you can set transfer ‘speed limits’ and tweak things slightly regarding data flow. FileZilla is fine.
Um, errr, you know Dreamweaver does FTP, right? I find it works great, so don’t see the need for anything else. Mind you, I have tried others, like FileZilla, and it’s fine, although the interface is a bit fugly, if you ask me. I must admit, I did try Transmit recently and it is pretty nice, but TBH, it’s much easier to use Dw. I also find that Transmit, FileZilla, Coda etc are rather unreliable about where they place files on the server, whereas I don’t have that problem with Dw. Maybe it’s just a matter of practice. I found Transmit to be faster at uploading large amounts of files than Dw (could just have been a one-off on a good connection night, not sure), BUT Transmit dumped all the files in unpredictable places, so I had to spend the time saved in moving the files into their proper places, which annoyed me a bit.
I use DW5 and Transmit on my Mac. Most files are fine to just use DW, but Transmit works best for larger files. I’ll often upload new mp3 files, or similar, with Transmit while working with the related rss.xml and other pages in DW.
For those that said Transmit uploads files anywhere on the server, I can’t say I’ve seen that. You need to specify the directory and subfolders, but that’s basic FTP setup to me. I’ve used Filezilla on occasion for clients on a PC, but Transmit is better designed and easier IMO.
In my case, an example is when I’m uploading a whole lot of files that are in different folders on the local machine. If I highlight all those files in something like Dreamweaver and click upload, they upload to the same folders on the server. I was shocked when Transmit uploaded all the files to one folder on one level. Haven’t yet worked out why that happened.
