Its my opinion

I still think that VPS Hosting will capture more market than Dedicated of any other type of hosting.

Please share your thoughts about it. If you agree then why? If you do not then why?

There will be more VPS customers than dedicated server customers, but I think they will not surpass the number of shared hosting customers. The VPS has some potentially strong competition to face from “cloud hosting”. Only time will tell which will be the victor.

for windows hosting most companies does not offer ms sql database part of the package. that made me always go for dedicated.

I don’t get this thread… there will always be a need for various levels of hosting, it’s not like the future will suddenly put a halt to that.

I suppose the main thing here is demand. If the services are in demand they will be bought.

As Alex said each hosting types have its own specific customers. I don’t think if such a comparison has any meaning. Nobody will go for a dedicated server if they do not need it for their requirements. And in case of VPS also that is true. If you ask me the most used one I would say it is shared hosting.

I agree. However resellers is big part of the market as well. goods and services have own buyers and that is logical.
As per our web hosting company: we have more shared web hosting customers

I strongly disagree. VPS sometimes is much slower than shared hosting (it’s because resources are used to handle not only your site, but also keep OS running). It’s useful only if you need more management than shared hosting can offer, and you don’t really care about performance

Yes I would like to agree with that. Reseller packages also have a remarkable place in the market. It is just because they are the basic hosting packages in the market. And only when one out grows these plans they will opt for the higher options; unless they have a specific requirement to choose a VPS or dedicated server.

Dedicated servers are certainly the best web hosting solution available, however, as not many customers require a dedicated server for hosting websites, it will always be under the VPS’s and shared hosting plans when it comes to Sales. For better explanation, Shared Hosting > VPS Hosting > Dedicated Servers.

Hope this helps…

I don’t think this is a true statement. Even I am not dare to say shared hosting is the best hosting solution available as it is always dependent on requirements.

Sure, everything depends on personal needs only. I even have a few websites hosted on shared platform with other companies, and it’s fine for me.

The future of the market is definitely moving towards virtualization and away from dedicated servers, BUT, it’s really going more toward the cloud hosting model than the standard VPS model.

A properly designed cloud hosting setup will really streamline the server management side of hosting. There are incredible cost cuts in implementing high availability and fault tolerance. The idea of no more 3am hardware emergencies alone is a huge bonus for any hosting company with even a modest client base.

IMHO, any web host that isn’t already diving into this change is going to be crying very soon.

Some folks will tell you that the performance isn’t there, but our benchmarks say different on that, particularly when utilizing a performance optimized SAN for Mysql.

The biggest issue is the high up-front costs that the model requires versus the much lower entry barrier of dedicated servers. I think we’ll see that start to come down as more and more datacenters equip themselves for cloud hosting.

I can see shared hosting accounts taking on more characteristics of a VPS account.

Perhaps in the not too distant future shared hosting accounts might essentially be a micro VPS account.

BlueHost have already introduced a CPU sharing system that means that their shared hosting accounts can now get as much CPU as if they were VPS accounts and without the overhead of the VPS software.

Yes and No.

On a VPS your sites are not throttled or penalized per account by the method Bluehost is using IMO.

ASFAIK Bluehost has no means of allocating equal memory usage to each account. However WebFaction advertises guaranteed memory allocation per account.

Sure. Usually shared hosting works faster than VPS
