How to train yourself to be a front end developer

Hi from wet & bleak York UK!

There’s tonnes of front end developer jobs these days. If someone wanted to be a able to secure a job as a front end developer such as the job detailed in the above link what is the recommended approach?

Ive dabbled alot but is there a hands on course ./ approach out there rather than just watching training videos?

Thanks,
David

I completed the General Assembly WDI course on Friday - I can recommend that for sure. It’s not cheap though, and if you’re not already London based, then the costs ramp up again.

One thing you need to remember is that job postings often list the entire ‘wish-list’ of skills, sometimes even those not really needed to do a good job. So don’t think you need to be an expert in all of the skills listed.

Make sure you have a good portfolio to show the prospective employer. The items in your portfolio should showcase what you have done yourself, not the results of following tutorials or project-based courses.

And make sure if you get to the interview stage that you let the person doing the interview know that you are willing and able to continue learning new technologies and skills.

I thought SitePoint Premium had put together learning paths using their courses, but I can’t seem to find them at the moment. Completing one of those should prepare you well.

There’s a resource called the Front-end Developer Handbook, which has recently been updated for 2017. If you’re the sort of person who prefers the self-study route, then it lists all the topics you need to know, and has pointers to good online resources where you can learn them.
