Hello, i have internet connection via a router, i notice that after a while my internet speed slow down significantly. I suspect people in my neighbourhood connect to it since it is free.
My question is how to limit (by password) for computers that want to get my internet connection via wireless device.
I log-in to my router via a browser using http://192.168.0.1/… I login using log/pass I setup when originally setup network, then I go to the section where I can set/enable an “access point” with these settings:
SSID: “Name of network”
Security: WEP
WEP Encryption: 64bit
Key1: “Password for network”
Then it’s possible somebody has got there first and made themselves admin, maybe…
You should check your router manual for security, and if the manual says you should be able to access 192.168.0.1, then you should reset your router using the small reset button and try again.
Well, a way to reset you router would be to use a stretched-out paper-clip and stick one end into the small reset hole somewhere on your router case… I would look this up in the router manual though.
Then you should be able to logon using the default manufacturers log/pass.
You can do this also, when you are able to access the setup page of the router, rename the SSID to whatever you want, and then disable the “Broadcast SSID”
And if you want to take it a step further, change the router IP address and put a different password on the router.
Yeah, definitely disable SSID broadcast and change the default password if you don’t want people messing with your network. Change the channel your network broadcasts on too if you have lots of other networks/cordless phones in range and want to steer clear of interference.
1: Use WPA not WEP if your router supports it (WEP keys can be cracked in 10mins). Use a strong password, letters and numbers.
2: Disable SSID Broadcast (this wont make you invisible but it helps)
3: Use MAC filtering to just allow access to your wireless devices according to their MAC addresses. (not full proof because a hacker can spoof his MAC to match yours but it will help)
4: Change the damm router username and password from the default.
