Lots of people have given the thumbs up to adwords and I agree it is great.

I think the best approach to selecting keywords depends on your ambition for the site you are creating. Consider a generic phrase that you want. Type it into Google and see what comes up. How many of those results can you realistically beat? What links do they have?

If the answer is “not many” then it is probably worthwhile to focus on something more narrow and build from it. Keep in mind that it is very rare for people to use the second page of results.

You write about them. If you can’t write well, get someone else to do it, but make sure your content satisfies your visitors’ needs.
