Graphic v. Web

I’ve heard it said that web design is not the same as print design, but is web design (theory, at least) the same (or similar) as graphic design?

Thanks.

Websites are not fixed like a printed document. They have to adapt to the medium they are displayed in. Font sizes will change, things will move around a lot. So web layouts have to be flexible, unlike a printed document. When you decide on the layout of a web page, you are really engaging in graphic design, and a lot of factors that apply to print are relevant to the web … but graphic designers need to learn about the nature of / constraints of the web to be good web designers.

There was a recent thread on this subject, which might help.

Print Design(Paper) is different to Web Design(Web Browsers), but they both come under the umbrella of Graphic Design.

I totally understand the relationship b/w print design (well, not totally, but mostly, at least).

I was wondering about graphic design. The print design comment was just an introduction, to make it sound better.

All the usual things like white space, line height, balance of elements etc. still apply in web design as much as print design.

OK…but I just said I didn’t care about print design.

I’m talking about graphic design.

I might have made this unclear (to all), but I’m only worried about graphic design!

I’m not mad…might seem that way.

All I’m doing is confirming that web design does involve graphic design. They are not the same, but relevant to each other. Things such as like white space, line height, balance of elements etc. are elements of graphic design, and they all apply to the web.

There … I didn’t mention print once.

Oops. :shifty:

Web Design can contain graphic design elements and Principles.

Elements include:

Line
Shape
Form
Tone
Texture
Colour
Letterform

and Principles:

Figure
Ground
Cropping
Scale
Proportion
Pattern

Balance
Contrast
Hierarchy
Cohesion/Unity
Composition

Composition

One or more of these things might be used to create a web design.

Have a look at this thread.

Nice thread.

Thanks.
