Good Web Design Book

Hi, I new to web design and am wondering about a good web design book. I now some html and CSS and would be designing for a Magento Ecommerce Store. I already have Web Design for Dummies (published in 2006).

Thanks

I still read books because not everything in the web is a total replacement for getting a well written viewpoint from another professional. Just because you can read up on a subject in one location doesn’t mean that a book written by someone else won’t cover things from a totally different perspective that will benefit you in general. It’s pretty narrow minded to simply stop using books (IMO) out of the case that similar info (as great as some of it is) can be found on the web.

I can’t comment on Web Designing for Dummies

I would recommend SitePoint’s: The Principles of Beautiful Website Design by Jason Beaird: http://www.sitepoint.com/books/design1/
It’s a short book that I found gave a really solid overview of design considerations.

My only complaint about it is the bias towards Photoshop (I’m a fan of GIMP - especially the fact that GIMP is free).

The other book that’s worth reading is Don’t Make Me Think By Steve Krug. It is a bit dated but overall the principles set out are worth keeping in mind.

I think books are still important in our learning endeavor for better understand whatever subject we want to be good at. I recently purchased HTML & CSS from sitepoint, I’m on my 4th chapter and my site is coming along. The fact that I wrote the coding from the beginning… I feel that I’ve accomplish a lot in just a week. Seeing my site live and being updated on a daily basis is quite rewarding.

Thank you SitePoint!

These days, I think you can find anything you want (including some very good tutorials) on the web. I stopped buying learning books years ago.

Magento has a pretty good set of documentation under their “Resources” tab of their website.

Thanks

Sitepoint has a number of real good books. For example: http://www.sitepoint.com/books/html2/
