Like 99% of Internet users, I use either Google, Bing or Yahoo for the vast majority of my Internet surfing, but now and again I come across newcomers to Internet search and more often than not I give their service a test and see how they match up to their gargantuan competitors.
One of my favourite search engines at the moment is DuckDuckGo, a one-man operation that retrieves better results than search engines like Bing and Yahoo on certain keyword phrases. I’ve tried others, like Cuil before it shut down, and none of them seemed as polished as this.
So, whether it be the likes of Dogpile or Cuil, does anyone else have a favourite small search engine outside of the big names of Google, Microsoft and Yahoo?
Yep. I referenced that at the end of my second paragraph in my first post.
I absolutely loathed Mathematica when at university, but I must admit that for anything Maths Wolfram Alpha is by far the best tool on the Internet.
Twitter search is a useful tool, but more often than not when I’m searching for something I end up facepalming at the insane comments some people leave about things they clearly know nothing about, such as the recent John Lennon tributes where thousands of fans professed their love for “Lenon”.
I don’t use twitter’s search engine. I use my followers to help me identify things that I can’t really search for (such as “What was that game for the Amiga that had ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem’ as background music?” or “My washing machine’s on the blink, my clothes are coming out dripping wet, what’s wrong with it?”.
