Can I change name?

Someone on Sitepoint suggested I change my username from Another Designer to Exceptional Designer. I think that’s a grand idea! I would like to “fake it till I make it!” So can I change my username on Sitepoint? Do I need a moderator to do it? Or it can’t be done?

That’s so true! we don’t even seem to agree on the color of the sticky threads

You’re right. I’ll hold off on the username change. Maybe I can change it to RICH Designer when my career takes off. Did I say that? :x

Andrew I really wouldn’t change my name to “exceptional designer.” Someone suggested that to me. Okay, I get the message, I suck as a designer. :open_mouth: I understand.

Design is very emotive if you have a style all of your own. However, as a commercial designer you will be expected to design what the client wants and not what you want. So if your client hates your work you are in big trouble

I agree. I think something like your actual name, your business name, or something that is personal to you would be a good idea for a new username  as opposed to a username that attempts to describe how you are as a designer / developer.

I would hardly say that anyone is trashing your work, I think everyone is giving you honest and constructive criticism. It doesn’t matter whether your name is Crappy Designer, Another Designer, or Exceptional Designer. If it’s your actual work that you’re concerned about when taking in the views and opinions of other members of the SP Community Forum then you shouldn’t really be so concerned about your username.

I’d like to chip in with some of my own criticism too. I personally would highly discourage you from changing your username to Exceptional Designer. For me, after seeing your existing design work (and knowing what the majority of the members thoughts are on the work they’ve reviewed for you) I would say that calling yourself an Exceptional Designer and “faking it until you make it” would be a terrible move. I personally think it would make you look cocky and over confident in your design skills when anyone can have a look at your previous threads and posts and see that you aren’t confident in your design skills at all. That doesn’t scream out to me someone who is an Exceptional Designer.

Have a think about it first and take into consideration what everyone else is saying in this thread. I think what I’d like you to do is carefully read what everyone else is saying in this thread and then surprise us all with a new username that isn’t Exceptional Designer  Of course the choice is up to you. Goodluck.

If my member name was Exceptional Programmer I’d probably get a lot of comments that agreed with that. But on the other side of the scale than what I had intended!

Just remember that you only get one change. If you change it then that’s what you will be stuck with forever more regardless of what comments you get about it.

yeah yeah I know!
But I am going to not let you get away with trashing my work anymore. It’s your opinion and that’s cool. But until YOU SHOW ME YOUR WORK I’m not going to let you belittle me anymore. :stuck_out_tongue:

That’s a fair comment

But now, on the serious side… do you really want to change your name for a Exceptional Designer? … don’t you want to wait a little bit till you settle your career and make it a bit more… commercial?

Another Designer, surely it would be better to have something not implying how good / bad you are :stuck_out_tongue:

Everyone gets one change. If you want to go ahead, please PM me.

IMO, Another Designer is a great username. It’s your choice of course, but I wouldn’t change it

There’s always the chance that “exceptional” could be taken the wrong way (as in… “isn’t she exceptionally bad at driving!”)

I wouldn’t say that. It’s all relative. Some know more than you, some less. And when it comes to design, a lot of it is subjective. You can’t please everyone. If you knew the debate that went on about the new color for highlighting the Sticky threads you would be convinced of that!

The point is, you’re better than you were and you’ll be better than you are now. As long as you keep learning at SitePoint you can’t help but to improve.
