I am a newbie… do not really know much about programming, coding…but I have been researching about reducing background image file size. My questions started when I saw this very very inspiring website.
This website’s background image is 22.1 kb and it’s dimensions are 1400x823!!! What is the process done to reduce file size so dramatically but still keeping the image quality ?
I don’t think that they have a special trick, the background image doesn’t use a very wide range of colours. If you have a look at some of the high resolution pictures elsewhere on the site you’ll find that they have far higher file sizes.
I think I posted this question on the wrong forum… sorry! But your answer was my guess but ‘save for web’ doesn’t bring down file size that much for me , as they did in their background image. It starts to pixelate bad…I am really concerned about .jpg files. I guess they have a special trick of their own
It’s probably done in an image editing software application.
Photoshop, and I would expect other reputable image editing applications, has a ‘Save for Web’ option where you can select to not save any unnecessary headers in the .jpg file and also apply as much jpg compression as you like until the image quality becomes unacceptable in order to reduce the saved file size.
With .gif images you have the option to reduce the number of coulours in the colur pallete which helps reduce the filesize as well.
