Ive always wondered how sites like sky.com and zavvi.com and many more sites create amazing “photographic” image quality backgrounds but there file size is only around the 120 KB !!!
How the heck do they do it ?
I should point out I am new to the world of graphic design and optimisation so please be gentle with me
In programs like Photoshop, Fireworks and Illustrator there is a very handy Save for Web option, which reduces the file sizes massively and optimizes images for web viewing. That’s the standard way to do it.
Funnily enough I have actually used that feature of PS to create a sprite, but I still managed to reduce the image file down further with the aid of some softward I downloaded called “PIXresizer”.
I`ll give making a large background jpg image ago through that “Save for Web option” and keep this post updated with my results.
