I had this idea; that’s how I oft get trouble, BTW. I found this really nice JPG of a simple 12 color color wheel. I thought that I could pick a “base color”, then I could use the Hue/Sat/Lum (master) sliders to match the color closest to my “base color” on the color wheel. I would then have an instant 12 color palette for design… that was my theory at least.
First off it seems as if PS doesnt do the math right. For example Let’s say we had sample of a yellow color. Looking at it in the picker it says: H:60, S:80, L:99. Our desired swatch breaks down in the picker as: H:52 S:100 L:69.
One would figure we could set the Hue/Sat/Ligh to : H:-8, S:20, L:-30 and obtain a matched color. But after the operation happens what I get is a color which samples as: H:52, S:90, L:76 ???
maybe I am doing something wrong here?
The second problem is more color theory based. I was hoping that altering a color wheel this way would show more tonal possibilities, but actually it seems to muddy up the rest of the colors so that when you try using a tint or a shade of the color… well…it’s just awful.
I know there are programs that do this function, specifically… but mostly I like to do this manually, for my own comprehension. I would appreciate input from any Photoshop masters with good knowledge of color theory…
