It depends on what type of forum you are planning to add. BBPress (I have never used) was created by the same group behind Wordpress so it is designed to integrate with Wordpress whereas other forum systems are not without a [URL=“http://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-phpbb-bridge/”]bridge of some type to share the user database.

I’d recommend you use BBpress, it’s pretty decent and not that hard to implement.
