I didn’t like pmachine since it felt much like a nuke/blogger without search engine friendliness and with the same nuke-like blockiness. Most of the sites I were bloggish and the few that looked nice did so on first glance.

It’s a very nice product for what it is. I do like it. But as per the author or many of the enthusiasts, I don’t think it was designed to be a CMS although it is being used as such. I’d say that Article Manager is where a CMS should be although it is much more basic than it should be at that price. NePHP has much more ‘potential’ albeit complicated and having its own quirks, issues and high cost.

I think it’s a tough time for CMS products but we are getting close…

Things have gotten really bad. I bought version 4, and the next day, price slashed by half. Nevermind… emailed them about change of email address, no reply at all, not even after sending at least 3 mails. Then version 5 is out, and no upgrade. Don’t waste your money. I will give you my copy for free.

Wow… I didn’t know that!!! Typical for what happens with PERL-based scripts. Many authors like writing to a flat file… unbelievable…

It seems that the Siteworks Pro customers are extremely unhappy here and that is not good. I don’t think the product is where I’d be comfortable as a CMS. There are a few others mentioned here that have considerable promise but we’ll have to see… question of what to do now…

They used to be good, you can catch them online and chat with them. Now, it’s just downhill all the way.

It’s very good. I have 4 copies of it and am selling two since two of my sites have really taken off and take up all of my time. I’ve also unfortunately had to move to MS based machines thank to work. I’m selling them for $295 each license (regularly $500) which comes with 4.51, the new version and with a free upgrade to 5. You can actually program php scripts in the templates! Right now unfortunately there is little that comes close.

The sites are corporate. The CMS is much easier (and compelled growth) and the vbulletin integration gives me flexibility to do a lot in there. The best site I have seen using NePHP is animeonline.net and pctechtalk.com both which are pretty awesome. It convinced me to get it after trying the nuke equivalents and wasting a BOATLOAD of time. PHP still has crap out there for CMS and the free ones are not worth all the time tinkering.

Agree regarding Nuke, but the price for NeLogic is a wee too steep. BTW, have you any news about vB integration with the latest v3? Have been looking at Mambo recently. It’s priced in A$ instead of US$!

i emailed the nelogic for discount as i’m a student and dont have much money and they say they have special pricing for students like 55% off if you can proof that you are a student. i think 55% around 220 bucks or something, but still i’m so broke if they put 199 i would certainly buy it

I saw Newfangled’s WebTop mentioned here, as well as listed in the first post, but when I went to their site I discovered that it is only available to Newfangled’s clients! Just thought I should mention this. It sucks, the demo looked perfect for what I needed.

Now they finaly support from a forum: http://forums.sitecubed.com and support are now much better

And SiteWorksPro are comming in a new verson, v. 6.0. This we be a bigg update from 5.0

I’ve done a test installation of eZ publish and was thinking of it as THE solution for my CMS needs, for all of it’s features (lots of them indeed). What I’ve read in this thread, though, made me rethink my plans - so it’s too slow for shared hosting - that’s back to searching through endless lists of candidates for me.

Ok, maybe we could make this search easier by refining it a little. Here’s what I’d love to find: a CMS that…

• is free
• is pure php (no need for builds or binaries)
• has well structured, clean, modularized source code
• supports plugins (and makes it easy to write new ones)
• runs well on a shared server account
• Allows for multiple freestyle templates on one site (let’s me show content the way I want)
• Let’s me edit templates on Dreamweaver or other WYSIWYG editor (without tons of intermixed scripting code)
• Has a nice search engine
• Is multilingual
• Is more than a forum or blogger (I want a SitePoint, not a Slashdot)
• Scales my images to given standards (thumbnails)
• Is multisite: many related sites, one installation
• Has a control panel that even my little sister could operate (to ad content, at least)
• Has a showcase website that is NOT in German (source code commented in english’d be nice too)

Do I want too much? I gess that’s what most webmasters are looking for. Could anyone comment on this feature list, maybe ad something cool that I forgot? Most of all, has anyone found my dream CMS and would care to share his/her finding with us all?

As for eZ publish, version 3 is on beta; they promisse a lighter system, should I believe it will be light enough? SitePoint has an article on eZ that says lotsa good things about it, can I still hope?

This is a very good list you have put together. I have been researching CMS’s for a while and I’m getting very exhausted. It seems that everytime I think I find the perfect one, it falls short by one or two of the items above. I can think of two more to add to your list:

1. The ability to automatically create and maintain a “parallel” set of HTML files (or an excellent automatic caching system) to increase speed/decrease server load. The html files would also be more search engine friendly because of thier “.html” URLs, althought this can also be achieved through the Apache mod_rewrite directive. Some of the CMS’s do this, but at varying levels of ease.

2. A good set of easily added “pluggable” modules for extending functionality (i.e. photo galleries, calendar, etc.)

Nephp is way ahead of siteworkspro. However, based on the feedbacks i read, Nephp’s support isn’t really good. Sitworkspro is a decent program but it’s current features are not what i am looking for. But I am looking forward to it’s version 6.
