I like pMachine. I’m actually using it as the news module for http://thecofclub.deeplist.com/index.html . I was surprise that it didn’t get to the top of HotScripts. Anyway, I only like pMachine just as that, a news/blogging system and not as a CMS portal. It’s so easy to use and you simply include a single file in your PHP script and then use the different functions to put the archives, news, calendar, etc. onto your site.

Has anyone actually tried/tested EzPublish v3 (beta version obviously since the release version is not available yet)??
Any thoughts? Is it much lighter/ quicker then v2?
would you recommend installing and testing this, and then upgrading to the full version once it becomes available?
I am about to start a massive site conversion from an enormous amount of html files to a CMS system, and looking for the best solution. I like the features in EzPublish, but dont want something that is going to be slow, especially since our site will be running on a shared server. I also dont want to do the xfer to EZP and then find its too slow and have to do it all over again.
Hoping for some useful input from somebody who has experience with v3.

There is a thread dealing specifically with ezPublish3. I don’t have the link handy. I gave it a close look a few weeks ago. It is definitely faster the 2. Afraid I haven’t had the opportunity to look at it again. There were a few problems with the shared server install, but, think those have been mostly resolved. Take a look at the Wiki information as well as the Developers forums, specifically the ez3 forum.

Same here! I’ve found Article Manager to be the best after comparing it with others: http://www.interactivetools.com/products/articlemanager
Only downside is it is Perl/CGI and not PHP/MySQL. But they have great support, will install it for free, it’s very easy, and extremely flexible and versatile, IMO. Russell, feel free to add it to your list.
I added it… I’m thinking about making this list shorter by only adding the best recommended CMS’s around. PM me if you want to recommend an CMS, and I’ll put it at the top of the list if it gets enough recommendations.
I use my own custom solution personally.
How about someone writing an article about CMS’s for sitepoint raises hand

It’s the nature of the beast… The first post is where the main information is, the rest are peoples recommendations and views.
If you’d like to write an article… go for it. Though it would end up being outdated very quickly.

I agree, I wish someone would either write an article or develop a good website that would list, review and rank CMS’s. I’ve spent so much wasted time installing and testing CMS’s and not being able to find one that matches my needs. I think Sitepoint and its vast array of high quality testers, writers and developers would make great canidates for this service. (You can thank me later for volunteering Sitepoint!) I’m getting to the point where I might even consider paying a small fee for a service like this.

Hmmm…decisions, decisions. I think for most sites a lot of the CMS’s out there are overkill. Like somebody said previously, you might be better off just piecing together different newsscripts, forum software etc. and gaining similar functionality without learning the CMS specific template language.

Okay, so its been about 2 weeks of spending faaaar too much time researching/ testing out/ head scratching/ etc of different options for the CMS I am to use, and am finally getting close to working out which way to go.
I installed ezPublish 3 and spent about 10 hours on it before concluding that there is nowhere near enough documentation to be able to figure it all out, so have given up on that.
Other options I’m looking at are:-
ezPublish 2
- worried about speed
- how easy is it to add external scripts (such as an externally developed image gallery, etc)?
- still think it is my #1 choice
Typo3:
- easy to add external scripts?
- looks VERY difficult to customise
- but VERY powerful
- how about speed? anyone tried it on a big site?
Plone:
- havent tried it much, but it looks pretty good… anyone tried it? comments?
Envolution:
- looks great, excellent documentation… any first hand experience?
Hoping to finalise this soon and get my hands real grubby with one of these systems soon… so any input would be appreciated once again.

Hello. I installed eZpublish 3 to fiddle around with recently. It’s much faster than previous versions (I have v. 2.7 running on my site). What I’m not sure about though is how much stress it puts on my webserver. If I could be convinced that it’s significantly less than 2.7, I will seriously consider migrating, because as far as I could tell using the demo, it was much, much “zippier.”
That said, it’s also extremely “non-intuitive” to someone with a limited understanding of PHP and XML. The install went fine, the demo was cool, but…moving beyond that can be quite a task it seemed.
It’s like a weblog … blog. Just a personal journal that many have these days.
This is by far the easiest most extensible tool I have found and I tried almost everyone on your list. Very user friendly. Cheap, good support, fair size community.

… so in effect creating your own CMS by amalgamating a bunch of separate systems together… anyone done this? care to share your experiences?
