This is a dedicated thread for discussing the SitePoint article ‘8 Quick Tips to Choosing a Domain Name’
Another fine article unearthed by Articlebot.
Here are some extra ideas about domain names from Revs:
-
If you have even the slightest doubt about registering a domain name let yourself cool off for 24 hours and then perform a simple test the next day - can you remember the domain name you were thinking of registering yesterday?
-
Don’t buy a domain name just because you have a wonderful marketing idea.
-
When you negotiate with someone who wants to buy a domain name from you, ask a ridiculously high sum and then stick to it. Don’t budge an inch. You can lose dozens of sales this way and end up with lots of domain names that nobody else wants.
-
If you find a rude word that is available to register as a domain name you should go for it. The next time you get drunk you will remember why it was such a good idea.
-
Don’t register domain names when you get home from the pub unless they are particularly funny.
-
If you wake up one day and realise you own over 200 domain names, tough luck, you can’t get a refund.
From my point of view:
domain name should be short, memorable and have .COM domain name extension if possible.
I suppose those are main rules in here.
londonescorts.biz was recently sold for 2000. .biz is a good alternative to .com, and means business.
Great post. I’ve started using a lot of unconventional names for marketing - for example isyourbusinessgrowing.com and the like.
A good website for generating good names is www.domainnamesoup.com
awesome stuff , dude.
Good job
Good post. I think so many people buy domain names and hope they will make huge money selling them down the road. Buy only domain names you will use or intend to use. That way you do not have to worry about selling them. You can wait for right person who wants the domain name to pay way to much for it.
i dont like .biz i think that the .com will always be king
I would counter some of the advice offered:
when you find a good dot com domain register it on the spot, many registrars exist merely to cream the sucessful searches of their users who failed to secure their find on the spot, if you wait a day to think about it you might find it gone.
Some registrars offer a refund on domains for the first five days after registration, this is the essence of name tasting and kiting.
I’ve done some of my best work after the pub, lateral thinking is good way to find great dot coms.
If you have a great marketing idea chances are someone else will too, so get in first and secure the dot com.
is that legal to take mispelled company domain name?
some say yes some don’t
who is the right one?
Very good tips
