How do you find your position in the SE's?

Hey guys,

Quick question that crossed my mind this morning.

Is is possible to tell just where in the SE's my website ranks for certain search terms..and in particular, where I stand with Google?

Say for example I'm optimizing my site for the keywords "business marketing" - is there anyway I can tell how I rate in a search for those terms anywhere?

Thanks for your help!

Steve

You could use software like www.webposition.com. It will give you detailed reports on the position of search terms with the different engines. However, the trial version only allows you to use alta vista, hot bot, and all the web. I think there are a few others, but I have no experience in them nor can I remember their names right now...

Thanks Devised, but I'm looking specifically for where my site stands in the listings.

Moospot's got the right idea. I forgot about that site and I was just playing with it last week. It would be nice to know just where my site placed, but knowing the first three pages of results is a help.

Thanks!

Steve

Besides, if you aren't in the first 3 pages of the search results, your chances of getting a click-through are practically nil.

Yeah, I know - but it'd still be nice to know just how far up I have to climb.

Google takes time to update. I would give it a couple of more weeks. Other engines aren't as reliable as Google, so unless you pay to have your site included in their index, you may be waiting a while.

Are the frames on that site gonna cause any problems with the SE's?
The site looks really nice, but it doesn't look very search engine friendly to me, but I could be wrong. ??

Hi
i read some more on the google forum and it seems that using iframes is a no-no for google.

Sorry let me explain, i read that a good internal link structure is a must, that is cross linking internal pages. So my use of iframes is not the way to go.

To optimize the website for google i think i must convert the pages with iframes into tables, but that's the one thing i wasn't happy with out of design opion. I like the box layout and the colored scroll bar for lenghty content.

Btw i also read that google doesn't use meta-tags for page ranking as the other SE do.

My questions:
1 How can i bypass the use of iframes and get a good internal link structure???

2 Is it true that optimizing a website for a search engine (ie get a better SE ranking) in a busy sector, like the hotel, travel sector is much harder to accomplish?

Thanks guys for the earlier suggestions

You can use the REPORTS section of WebPosition Gold 2. This will give you your position in all the major search engines for the keywords you specify. It also gives you more information that you may also find useful.

I tried out WPG a while back, but I liked SE Commando's reports the best.
I offer SEO and reporting as an upsale to my clients, and the SE Commando engine builds beautiful HTML email reports. It's definitely worth checking out.

Wow, Rody that Web CEO looks awesome!

Re: Google Monitor

The Free Monitor for Google, formerly known as Google Monitor is what you are looking for. It IS VERY IMPORTANT in my opinion to know where you are even if you aren't on the first three pages. I monitor a few different sites very closely and on Google one can bounce anywhere from 2nd to 700th back to 5th in a matter of days. Even though google does a large update about once a month "the Google Dance" there is still variation on a daily basis. For instance the last Google Dance was on I believe the 15th of July. Yet for my most important search term I went form 10th to 3rd today. The reason it's important to know where you are even if you're not in the top three pages is because if you go from 700 to 600 to 500 ... 10th then you know something's going right. If the reverse is happening, you need to take a look at any changes you made, etc.

Using WPG or any other ranking software to check rankings on Google is against their TOS. I would not reccomend doing that....

I am not saying I am familiar with their TOS but I read an article (can't remember where it was, it was long ago) a while back that explained why that is not the case and I agree and hope the article was accurate Imagine it was against their TOS to check site rankings so your competitior could presumably hurt you by checking your ranking. It was not about WPG or anything but checking/querying google in general.
If I find the article I will post back with a link.

Google does not allow automated queries on their website. You'll find that info by browsing Google.com
