Talking What do you call this thing? CPU???!

That pic might indicate what I mean, it's a tower case with mobo and other content .. I call that a "case" whether there was a mobo inside or without! bottom line, I never call that a CPU!!!!!!!

Why do I ask? because most of Egyptians call it CPU!!! Today for example a doctor said we will see the CPU!! he meant the case

It happens every day with doctors (medical), teachers, some programmers and the rest of people including most of my family and I began to doubt that I will be wrong one day because I give a different term!!!

So before I lose my sanity, what do you call that part??

I'm so with you on that one! It annoys the hell out of me when people call it a CPU. I voted box

Haha! That's funny coz it happens quite often. Usually from people that would understandably have no idea, so i don't really care if they get it wrong. Sometimes I'll just agree to make it easier for myself.

I'd call it a case. Those cutout bits on the side are often called case modifications.

It depends on the audience and what you're talking about specifically. I can remember back to the early computer classes they teach around here, that whole container was always called the CPU. And that terminology has stuck, at least around here for the less technically inclined.

For those more technically inclined, I usually talk about the tower or just down to the generic computer. Unless I'm talking about something specific within the unit, at which time I'll get more granular

Lots of non-techie people here in Sweden call that 'the hard drive', for some reason.

i hate it when ppl call it a CPU.... and not even just the tower case... they include the monitor and keyboard and mouse as a whole "cpu package" ugh infuriating!!!!

( my IT teacher a few years ago used to call everything the CPU, needless to say i set her straight )

i voted for Tower, but i'd also call it a case, a box or whatever I like, and feel at the time with a very large slegdehammer.

i know some (or most) office people in the UK call them a Harddrive too. why? because they have not had proper training? or they have had the training, but it went through one ear and out the other?

This is a cpu Central processing unit.

This is a computer case or tower. Note: with all the hardware installed it is called a computer.

This is a lcd monitor or monitor. It is not the computer.

eek... I feel so embarrassed for you, docquesting... You were wrong on all three counts!!

The first was a RAM chip...

The second was a CPU...

and the third was one of those new fangled virtual fish-tanks by Macintosh.

Quick, edit your post before someone sees it !!

Case... or box / tower.

It contains a CPU, but it isn't one. I get very annoyed when stores have the "CPU Only" specials advertised in big letters. Makes it difficult to educate people.
