If this is indeed your first Node app, you would find this book extremely difficult to follow. It covers far too much ground in too little time. Many packages are added with almost no explanation. I have worked through a couple of Node books previously, and the book does show one approach towards creating a web app. Alternatives (such as Express) are not even mentioned. I enjoyed having the sandbox and entering my code. I did fine following the book, debugging my typos and getting the desired results, until the final chapter, when after entering a huge amount of material, every route gave me a 404 not found. I have no idea how to know what went wrong when everything was working at the end of the previous chapter. Essentially, this book lets you look over the shoulder of an experienced Node developer as he writes an app. It doesn't teach you how to write one.

Very disappointing. I spent a lot of time entering code only to find I had an application that was not obvious how to use and did not seem to work. A final chapter showing screen shots of the web pages and some instructions on how to navigate the app, would not have gone a miss. Given SitePoint's supposed expertise in web development and training, I would have expected better. My recommendation: Don't waste your time on this book.

The code didn’t run in the second chapter. The HAPI was out of date
