Database Engineer | PostgreSQL SME | Hedge Fund

Working with a tier 1 hedge fund who are looking for an experienced engineer with strong automation experience and a broad knowledge of database technologies to join their database platform team in London. The role involves designing, implementing, and managing database solutions that meet our organization’s data management requirements, with an emphasis on ensuring high availability, performance, and security. Additionally, the position requires a strong focus on coding and automation. PostgreSQL experience is key (MongoDB too) alongside experience with AWS stack. Responsibilities: Design, implement, and oversee database solutions across multiple platforms, including PostgreSQL, Snowflake, ClickHouse, SQL Server, Aurora, RDS, DynamoDB, and MongoDB. Establish the golden standard for installations, ensuring consistency and excellence in database management. Serve as a PostgreSQL administration expert, with over 5 years of experience managing PostgreSQL databases both on-premise and in AWS environments. Develop and maintain automation scripts and tools to enhance efficiency in database operations and workflows. Ensure database systems deliver optimal efficiency, maintaining high availability and performance. Implement and manage robust database security measures, including access controls and encryption. Collaborate with development teams to optimize database structures, queries, and indexing. Perform routine database maintenance tasks such as backups, restorations, and performance tuning. Proactively monitor database systems to identify and resolve issues before they impact performance. Required Skills: At least 7 years of hands-on experience managing medium to large enterprise database platforms. Expert knowledge of PostgreSQL, including features, functionality, and optimization techniques, with experience in RDS and Aurora variants. Proficient in at least one of the following: MongoDB, DynamoDB, Redshift, or Snowflake. Operational knowledge of SQL Server. Strong understanding of data modeling across various database systems. Solid expertise in Linux. Experience using Python for automation tasks. Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code tools, such as Terraform and CloudFormation. Experience running applications and databases in containerized environments, including Docker and Kubernetes. Proficiency with CI/CD platforms and automation of software development lifecycle processes. Experience with declarative automation tools, such as Puppet and Ansible. Ideally experience with a similar organization across the buy side/investment management space would be the preference, but also open to candidates from investment banking and other backgrounds.
