Your first experience with wordpress

Dear all,

I am going to write an article about “having the first experience with Wordpress”(related to my studies). Therefore i want to hear your opinions and impressions of Wordpress. What makes it so special for beginners related to all features, functions, platform etc.?

As a “first time” Wordpress user, i’m really looking forward to hear your answers - thanks!

Best Regards
Jakob,

When I first used WordPress, about 7 or 8 years ago, I found it pretty overwhelming, even though it is supposed to be fairly straightforward. I think the main reason was that it was my first experience with a CMS, and I was a self-learner.

Part of the problem was that there is often more than one way to do something. For example, there are several ways to get to the edit page of a post to make an update, so it is easy to get lost.

My current clients pick up on it pretty well, but I offer them training sessions so that they can navigate the dashboard, and update their sites themselves right after launch, and I give them a personalized user’s manual. I also just show them one way to do something. I figure if they want to explore later, and discover the other ways on their own, they will - but in their own time.

My first experience with WordPress was after learning PHP by taking apart, extending, and maintaining another developer’s convoluted 1-man custom CMS that he’d deployed with a couple of clients who I inherited. I literally stayed up nights working on that project and learning the language.

WordPress came later, and was like a breath of fresh air. Yes, it has problems. No, it’s not a masterpiece of artfully coded PHP. But it’s easily explainable to clients (the dashboard) and pretty easily extendable.

That, exactly.
