Would an online development environment be beneficial to you?

How much time do you all spend setting up and managing the installation for your development environment, each year? Consider updates, installing plugins, fixing problems that arise, switching to a new computer, reinstalling your OS, duplicating your setup on another computer, and anything else of the same vein.

What if you could do it all online (imagine it was fully-featured and usable)? What if all your setup overhead was taken care of, and all you had to do is log into a web site somewhere and code (assuming it was secure)? Would you find that beneficial? Would you go for that?

How much time? 10 minutes tops for most situations. XAMPP made it pretty easy.

For windows servers with IIS…that’s a different story.

I think there’s an opening in the market (a VERY large one) for a decent code editor for smartphones like the iPhone and the Android platform (that perhaps runs via the web and thereby can be managed on the fly). That said I wouldn’t use an online IDE for the desktop, it’s pointless when XAMPP is so easy to install locally.
