Which 1 is more effective ONpage SEO or Off page SEO?

Which only happens for non-competitive phrases which usually aren’t worth ranking for in the first place unless you found the holy grail of SEO, a phrase that gets tons of searches but has no competition. It’s much more likely that it’s the former though.

Can you link an example of your pages, I’d be interested to see what keyword phrases you’re targeting. Gotta be honest, I’ll be very surprised if you actually link one, most of the time when I call you out on stuff you just drop off the face of the planet for a while.

Okay I’ll give you an example of a phrase that gets quite a significant number of people querying it where I got the top three spots in Google without any off page SEO

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=validating+radio+buttons&aq=f&aqi=g5g-m1&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=

There are quite a few people who are trying to figure out how to do that in JavaScript who do that particular search as I get a significant number of visitors from Google every day to my pages listed at the top of those results.

I also have position 6 on the first page for “javascript download” within hours of the page being uploaded and it has now been at that position for months and I still haven’t got around to doing any off page SEO fir that phrase.

Wow wow wow, you’re actually serious aren’t you… Stephen you’re quite clearly not an SEO and you shouldn’t be posting in the SEO forums without prefacing every single post with the words ‘in my opinion’ or ‘I have a theory based on zero practical experience’.

Hmmm, let’s see why you’d rank so well so quickly:

  1. The keyword phrase is non-competitive, for starters there isn’t a single PPC Ad, not one, that’s how much traffic this phrase gets (480 globally per month according to GKT and that will be bigger than actual), no one is trying to rank well for it…

  2. There are only 619k pages returning for the search despite there being three words and no search operators used.

  3. Not a single page in the first 10 other than yours uses that exact phrase in the page Title.

  4. You rank well for multiple variations of that phrase, another sure sign that it’s non-competitive

I could go on but I have stuff to do. In short Stephen you’ve shot yourself in the foot here big time, not only have you showed me beyond any doubt that you don’t know SEO as well as you think (which is understandable given that you don’t actually do it for a living) but you’ve also proved that ‘site authority’ is what gets pages like this one ranked despite you arguing in earlier threads that that’s not possible. That page ranks because your main site has 47k links some of which are very good quality and that authority has been passed to your non-linked page, a great example of a page ranking because of site authority. Thank you. I said I’d post an exmple if I came across one but you ended up doing it for me.

Also, you should submit your site to the review section, I’d love to see what they’d make of it. Can I do it for you?

Why don’t you submit your own site.

I personally would love to see what people make of a so-called “website designer” whose personal site uses nested tables and features a horizontal scrollbar.

In all honesty though, I will not offer feedback. I don’t have time.

But perhaps Stephen will. You see, that’s the beauty of Sitepoint. There are some incredibly talented people on this forum: the name Paul O’Brien springs to mind, as does Dan Grossman, as does Stephen Chapman.

Know your place. And remember it. This is the year 2010 and you are still using tables.

Pathetic, isn’t it? But if you ask Stephen to help, he probably will. He will teach you everything.

Life is so simple. All you need to do is stop acting like a fool.

Since I get more traffic coming from Google to those pages each month the figure you quote is obviously way too low. Anyway you can get way more traffic by targetting a few thousand less popular terms and getting top placements than you can targetting a really popular term and ending up on page five or six.

And if really competitive keywords is what is important to you then what about my link on page two for the search term “javascript” where the only off page seo I have done is the link to that page in the sig I have on this forum.

Also since a large part of my income is generated from those sites and that income is dependent on getting a lot of visitors to those sites SEO is an important aspect of what I do. It is just that what you think of as SEO and what I know is the most effective type of SEO for the types of sites I develop are two different things.

I like your style Andrew.

On Page and Off Page are like 2 eyes, equally important. We can distinguish but you cant determine which is better. Without on page optimization, whatever promotion you do it doesn’t work and vice versa.

There’s one born every minute. And that clown in Buxton is one of them.

Wanna know what I did today? I wrote to Stephen Chapman and asked him for a backlink. And you know what – he gave me one.

You can see it here, http://www.felgall.com/link1.htm

I must repeat, though, that some of these Sitepoint guys are amazing. Stephen, in particular, is not only a backbone of this forum, he’s also responsible for the Javascript section over at javascript.about.com. You just cannot beat that level of experience and expertise.

One day that sad little fool in Buxton will learn.

Totally missing the point as usual and seriously and you don’t need to tell me about long tail/low search keyword phrase strategies.

Stephen, a while back we had a dicussion about whether or not pages could rank based purely on the strength of the site that they were a part of, you said that’s not possible and asked me to link a page as an example. I forgot all about it till this came up but now I’m going to point to your own page as a perfect example.

It’s the fact that you posted it up as an example of how pages can rank without off-page SEO that shows me beyond any doubt that you don’t have a clue about SEO. The page only ranks because of off-page factors, i.e. the rest of the site that it’s part of. You actually made not one but two errors in one go, well done. You said that the page doens’t rank because of off-page factors and in fact that’s exactly why it ranks. And secondly you contradicted your earlier denial that that’s even posisble.

You regularly post in the SEO section but you have no practical experience of SEO and everything you write is based on your personal theories passed off as fact. You imply an authority for your opinions that doesn’t actually exist and far from helping you just add to the bad advice and misinformation that already fills the SEO forum.

Stephen your idea of SEO is different not just from mine but the rest of the SEO industry.

Not a problem, feel free to visit my portfolio pages where most of the entries have testimonials.

No idea who you are but bring it on kid, I personally don’t like your style (I think insulting people online is a bit lame).

Anyone who knew anything about web design would be able to see from the source code on my site that it’s a CMS site, in this case Joomla, and Joomla uses tables. Further, there’s nothing wrong with using tables, you’re a victim of the CSS/tables hype that pervades the webdesign industry, maybe you should think about it a little more.

As for feedback on my site, go for it. If you actually manage to come up with a criticism that’s deserved I’ll make the appropriate changes so you’ll be doing me a favour.

(Stephen, I think you just got played for a link :p)

I think both efforts are equally evaluated for the good SEO. On page optimization is important to describe our key phrases on the site and off page optimization is works like fuel to run our website over search engines and world wide web.

Another good thing about SitePoint is that we generally treat each other with respect, regardless of any professional or personal differences we may have. Let’s please keep it that way and stop the bickering and personal attacks.

Danke!
