Unable to boot XP

My machine has suddenly decided to stop booting, tried booting from safe mode (all options), but it hangs after Mup.sys. Tried booting from CD to get to the recovery console but this hangs after “Setup is starting windows” message.

Thanks for quick responses.

1.there are several solutions to try here… you can try to load the default optimized bios settings or bios default settings and reboot as this in most cases are related to a corrupt BIOS.

2.if that doesnt work you can (if it is possible) mount the harddrive in another puter and run a chkdsk on it, and copy a new mup.sys over to the disk (rename the old one to mup.sys.bak) then mount it in the computer again and restart… (you may also have a look at boot.ini) but the problem here is that you doesn’t know if it is mup.sys or the next driver/file that causes these errors.

3.if you have installed new hardware like pci cards etc… remove it and try again, as this can also be related to HW register failure.

but hopefully it is caused by a corrupt BIOS that can be fixed by point #1.

Good luck

After a quick Google I found this huge thread, it may have something useful:

PS: Googling errors is the best way to find answers.

For windows, first and last solution is “reinstall”

Laptop? Desktop?

What version (Home or Pro) and what service pack do you have installed?
