Should i bother with og:tags

Hi,
Just wondering if I should i bother with og:tags. It seems a little bit pointless adding loads of extra tags that replicate the meta tags just for social, especially if FB etc can infer og info from metatags.

Is it more for FB’s benefit than mine?

I’m not sure I’m familiar with what an “og:tag” is. Could you enlighten me (and others)?

They may be useful if you are concerned about how links to your site appear in social media.
While the regular meta tags for title and description may be sufficient to convey that information, one that may have an impact is the image tag, as something like Facebook may choose any image from a page, as opposed to the particular image you think would look best on a post.
