SEO to send rankings rocketing! Or, at least, increase

Hi,

Where can I start with Search Engine Optimisation?

I have logged on to Alexa the Web Information Company and my web site traffic ranking is 804,518 globally and for the UK is 61,151 with 59 sites ‘linking in’.

Not sure if this is good or bad. But I want to ‘actively improve’ my sites rankings. Some listings are 1st page of Google, others are 9th page of Google search results.

I know links to the site are helpful but this is quite difficult. The web site is a shop and we cannot offer a link back to the site featuring our link as it would be inappropriate!? Imagine PC World, John Lewis or BMW’s web site offering links to pages that linked to them - not going to happen.

So, WHAT CAN I DO to increase traffic to the site using free Search Engine Optimisation techniques??

I have searched for SEO related topics online but they just suggest the basics - add keywords, dont duplicate content, friendly URL’s, avoid JavaScript, etc… and obviously the site needs to (and does) look professional.

Any suggestions for increasing ranking?

Well Srobis a lot more basic than people make it seem. You want to keep fresh and updated content for one. Next you need to build backlinks.

Use forums, press releases, social media and bookmarking, link exchanges, directories, blogging, inter linking and log commenting to increase your links.
