Reseller hosting - nightly backups, security, 24/7 support,

Hi

I am looking to add reseller hosting to my stuff. And am wondering if anyone knows of a hosting company that has nightly backups, security scanning/fixing software, and 24/7 support and a disaster recovery plan (off site services).

Have to admit a friend who does the reselling hosting was stressed out when the server was hacked and while the company finally made the decision to restore from backup (with disaster recovery plan the decision would have been easier faster), the company offered no security scanning software, so she had to go get some products on her own, which just added to the stress.

Thanks

A few questions will help to get some better recommendations:

  1. What’s your monthly/annual budget?
  2. How mush disk space/data transfer are you looking for?
  3. What country do you want your server to be based?
  4. Are you looking for a host that has a decent upgrade path?

I am not sure what my budget needs to be, with the backup / security requirements. Decent upgrade path would be a very nice bonus. disk space 4 GB would be nice / data transfer maybe 250GB.
Thanks for asking about this information.

It seems you understand the market good. Do not pay attention to the price. Do your own search and find a lot web hosts. Then compare them and compare their reviews.

Do you know any offering the above?

You know… I would suggest you to do some research and to contact a few providers asking them about SLA and other important questions related to the Reseller Hosting services they offer. Daily back-ups is not something that many hosts do. Most do weekly backups. Do you have a good budget?

What is a good budget? :slight_smile: I helped document a Dept of Corrections disaster recovery plan and start implementing it. Me, its the off site day old backup, out of city weekly backup, the fall over server in a different city (working with your connectivity provider to make sure you are off a different major hub connection), security software, etc. My budget is nothing like I am used to thinking about LOL

I have to beg to differ on that one :slight_smile: Any decent reputable host will be doing rolling 7-day daily backups + weekly + monthly backups with secure offsite storage - basically using the “grandfather, father, son” principle.

Not strictly following that if they are using cPanel, as you end up by default with a situation where you’ve only got 2 copies of the data several times a month - as you end up at various points with:

Daily = Weekly
Daily = Monthly

Thanks,

I think in this situation when daily backups are very important it is recommended to use third party backup services.

Doesn’t that depend how far back you keep your backups?

You might store the last 4 weekly backups, the last 2 monthly backups, and of course the last 7 daily backups. Total 13 copies available at any given time.

Hi,

As I said in my post, if you’re using the standard cPanel backup tool then you’ll only sometimes have two versions - of course if you modify that by making it move the backups so that you keep some of them for longer then of course it doesn’t apply - but as far as the standard tool goes, without modification (and I include running a script when the tool completes) it only keeps 1 monthly, 1 weekly and 1 daily, so you end up with only 2 copies of your backup data on some days :slight_smile:

Thanks,

The cpanel backup item, reminds me of the old Novell vs Microsoft file management systems. Novells had a very system manager friendly file management system. File recovery was a snap, in one case I was able to recover a 2 yr old file without resorting to tapes. When exploring moving to Microsoft, after playing with Microsoft server for just 2 days my recommendation was we do NOT do it unless we purchase a 3rd party hard drive file management system.

Will admit I was hoping to avoid needing to run the backups, there are some nice backup programs available so its doable.

When you say “disaster recovery plan” you are referring to some sort of failover/high availability system where your files/databases are stored on another server seperate from the main server in case the server fails you can be back up and running immediately. I’m not sure why you need a security scanning software since all providers will have security measures already in place on the server to prevent hackers, etc. Take a look at the following:

Emailed with one provider and they will do an antivirus scan if requested. So not all providers have security scanning in place.
