Internet or internet - Take 2?

Looks like the Associated Press wants to help with this decision. I think their decision is wrong.

I tend only to use a capital I when referring to “the Internet”, but otherwise use lowercase—which I guess is mostly as an adjective, as in “internet-based services”, “internet service provider” and so on.

Same for “the Web”, and “web-based services”, “web design” and so on.

I agree. The Internet is, albeit sort of metaphorically speaking, a specific place, just like New York or Paris or San Francisco. The only difference is people get on the Internet, instead of go into it. They go to it all the time though, for sure. LOL! Oh, but they just don’t say that. “I’m going to (the) Internet”, sounds funny. Still, that isn’t any reason not to capitalize it. It certainly has earned the capitalization in my book!

Oh, this stimolate in me a good mind-game that you’ll be obviously able to understand. I just opened the article you linked and I just started reading the first lines of the author’s text. While doing it, sincerely, I didn’t thought at “Ok, now I’m going to click on the link, open the window and assume that there is a good website at it, so I can directly read the article’s text at first whithout considering for example the website header or logo”. I think it’s the same reason why we don’t say generally “I’m going to the Internet” (but it will be fine).
